6. Didn't Grey Owl live here for a while?

Archibald (Archie) Belaney was born in 1888. In 1906 at the age of 18, Belaney left Hastings, England for Canada where after a stay in Toronto he left by train for Temiscaming. It was in Temiscaming that he met Bill Guppy, a trapper. Belaney stayed the winter with Bill and his family. During that time he learned many hunting and outdoor skills.

The Guppy's owned a piano and Archie Belaney would pick up on the songs that the Guppy's sang and would play them on the piano.

In spring, Archie travelled by canoe with Bill and his brothers to Lake Temagami. Archie found work at the Temagami Inn which was operated by Dan O'Connor (1907). During his time there he began making friends with the Native people and began to learn Ojibway. He made friends with a Native woman named Angele Egwuna who worked in the kitchen of the inn. Angele's Uncle referred to Archie as the "young owl who sits taking in everything". It was here that the name Archie Grey Owl took form.

Between 1907 and 1927 Grey Owl worked as a fur trapper, wilderness guide and a forest ranger. He would eventually leave Temagami and meet an Iroquois woman named Gertrude Bernard. She would change his trapping ways and encourage him to promote conservation instead. He would publish his writings as he was no longer making money by trapping.
